Synchrotron CT study of arctic sea ice samples, together with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), at the ESRF in Grenoble (project "MICROSPRAY", Research Council of Norway, 2020-2025, project leader Sönke Maus) and the industrial customer Equinor.

Last week, our team, together with NTNU and ESRF scientists, conducted a 3-day measurement campaign at the ID19 imaging beamline. Arctic ice samples and the freezing behavior of seawater on different coated surfaces were investigated. The results help to better understand the growth behavior of sea ice and to develop coatings to which sea ice adheres less well.

For the experiments, ANAXAM has developed a complex infrastructure that makes it possible to carry out CT scans of ice samples and to produce tiny drops of seawater (ice spray) close to the freezing point.
